Maui Sunsets and Kai Makani
Just across the street from Kai Makani at Mai Poina 'Oe Ia'u Beach are some of the nicest sunsets in Maui.
For a number of months each year, the entire sunset, while beautiful, is not visible to the very end because the Island of Lanai is in the path of the setting Sun.
What do I see at the beach and how far away is it?
What are you seeing across the street at Mai'Poin'a 'oe Ia'u Beach Park? Here are some items along with the approximate distance from where you are standing according to measurements taken with Google Earth:
To the left you’ll see the Fish Pond = .6 Mile, and also to your left is the land point past Menehune Shores = .85 Mile, Molokini is 9.75 Miles and further is Kahoolawe Island at 13.68 Miles away.
To your right is the Kihei Canoe Club Boats = .6 Mile, and at .83 mile are the Sugar Beach, Kihei Sands Beachfront, and Kihei Kai Oceanfront Condos. As you go further right, the Entrance to Maalaea Harbor = 3.53 Miles, then the Green light at the McGreagor Point Minor Light which is 4.07 Miles away.
The lookout point on Honoapiilani Highway (just before traffic rounds the last viewable bend heading toward Lahaina on Route 30) is 4.97 miles away.

The windmills are 4.6 Miles from where you are standing and the Island of Lanai is 23.5 Miles in the distance.
The Kaheawa Wind Power is one of the largest wind farms in Hawaii. There are 34 windmills with a total output of 51 MW serving 18,700 homes. Each windmill is 295’ high with 115’ long blades. The Lahaina Pali trail goes up the mountain through the windmill farm. The trail provides excellent views but is very difficult due to the elevation changes, winds and exposure to the sun, so be prepared!

Lahaina Noon
Twice each year around late May and mid-July the Sun is directly overhead, once while it is going North towards the Tropic of Cancer and again when it returns on it's journey South towards the Equator. During this period the Sun is North of our Global Position, and your shadow will be South of you. This only happens in Hawaii of all the 50 states due to our location on the globe being South of the Tropic of Cancer (23.4 degrees North).
These dates are often referred to as "Lahaina Noon". The name "Lahaina Noon" comes from the Hawaiian word "lā hainā," which translates to "cruel sun". It was also known as "kau ka lā i ka lolo," which means "the sun rests on the brains".
In 2025, on May 24th at 12:24pm (the Solar Noon) vertical items (street light poles, fence poles, buildings, the Kai Makani Foot Wash, for example) will not have any shadow. Neither will you. This will also take place again on July 18th at 12:32pm when the Solar Noon takes place and the Sun is at a 90 degree angle to the you.
